A few weeks ago I stenciled some dotted hearts on a pair of jeans for my daughter, and I loved them so much I wanted to make a pair of polka dot jeans for myself. Since I wasn’t sure if this experiment would work out as well, I grabbed a $1 pair of jeans from the thrift store to play with and a bleach pen. This was one of the easiest refashion/upcycle projects I’ve ever done and I’m pretty excited about the results.

Here’s what I did:
I let my jeans sit with the bleach on them for a full 24 hours before throwing them in the wash, and the dots came out nice and bright. If you wanted more sutble dots, you could wash the denim after just a few hours.
A few notes:
Before you start making dots on your fabric, experiement on paper to see how much you need to apply for each dot. Since the bleach pen is a gel, it will sit as a dimensional dot on the fabric when you first apply it.
You want your dots to be about the same size, but if they vary a little it won’t be noticeable once it’s finished.
I did not put anything inside my jeans legs and I didn’t have any problems with it bleeding through from the front to the back, but if your denim is very thin you might want to slide some cardstock inside each leg before you start dotting.
