DIY pop art tee with Photoshop Elements

My daughter is obsessed with Beanie Boos. That’s right, Beanie Boos. The Beanie Babies of the ’90s have been reinvented as cute stuffed animals with freakily giant eyes. They come in three sizes: small, medium, and giant-but-it’s-gonna-cost-you. And there’s so many of them! We can’t go anywhere without my daughter seeing a new Beanie Boo that she really really really wants. Granted, she does play with them incessantly, making them have long conversations with one another about what’s for lunch, when their birthdays are, and the meaning of life. Her new kitty cat Beanie Boo (named Kiki) was her favorite Christmas gift this year. And one great gift deserves another, right? So I made her a tee-shirt with a pop art photo of Kiki on it.

They’re both pretty happy about it. Kiki’s now considering a modeling career.

It turned out pretty awesome! My son wants a shirt with his favorite stuffed animal on it stat.

I also used the Pop Art Guided Edit on a few photos of my kids.

I loved how this one turned out so much that I printed it out to hang on the wall.

You’ll find the Pop Art Guided Edit in Guided mode under Fun Edits in Photoshop Elements 15:

Watch the video below for step-by-step instructions:

To make a t-shirt with your pop art, you’ll want to print your pop art photo onto iron-on paper (this is the brand I used <– affiliate link). Remember to flip the image horizontally before you print, as directed in the video.

Trim the excess paper away from the pop art photo. You’ll need a prewashed t-shirt and a hard, heat safe surface you can iron on (I used a bamboo cutting board).

Make sure your iron does not have water in it, and turn off the steam. Iron the shirt by itself first to remove any wrinkles. Then place the pop art face down on the shirt. Place the hot iron down on it and iron with firm pressure, smoothly moving back and forth across the paper, making sure you spend plenty of time on the corners. The iron-on paper manufacturer recommends you iron for about 3 minutes for a full-page design.

Let the shirt cool for at least two minutes before attempting to peel off the paper. Peel the paper up slowly. If the design is coming up with the paper, press it back down and repeat the ironing step. Allow it to cool again before peeling off the paper.

For long term care, follow the washing directions on the iron-on paper instructions.
