How to make a super cozy Pocket Wrap — SO EASY!

In today’s post: You won’t believe how easy it is to make this cozy Pocket Wrap – no crochet or knitting skills required!

Alright, let’s start right off by admitting that I don’t quite know what to call this thing: is it a wrap? wide scarf with pockets? chunky pocket shawl thing?

Whatever you want to call it, I like it. It’s super soft, cozy to wear around your shoulders, and it has pockets. POCKETS!! And if you’ve been here before, you know I don’t like complicated projects, so this thing is DEAD SIMPLE to make.

Easy DIY finger knit wrap with pockets

It’s fun because it sits around your shoulders like a shawl, but it looks like a cardigan from the front. It’s soft and cozy, perfect for chilly days – or times when someone is running the AC colder than you’d like!

I first saw this idea when a gorgeous crochet pattern started circulating on social media. It looks so pretty – but I don’t know how to crochet! And I’m too lazy to learn how.

But I DO know how to use loop yarn – because it’s ridiculously easy – so I set out to see if I could mimic the look. And it worked!

How to Make a Pocket Scarf (Wrap)

Let me tell you a little bit about loop yarn. I love this stuff. It comes in balls that looks like this:

Light grey loop yarn

And when you pull out the yarn, you’ll see that it already has loops stitched into it:

This means you can “knit” using just your fingers – no knitting needles or crochet hooks necessary.

Loop yarn is SUPER soft, but it is thicker than a lot of other yarns, so if you make a wrap with it you’ll find it has a “chunkier” look. It’s ridiculously easy to do and you can work up this entire wrap in 3-4 hours, easy.

How to Finger Knit a Pocket Wrap VIDEO

I have created a video that will walk you through EVERY step of the process so you’ll know exactly how to make this wrap. Please be aware that shorts ads may play during the video – I know everyone hates ads, but they are what allows me to create all of these tutorials and give them to you for FREE! Thanks for understanding.

How to Finger Knit a Pocket Wrap

Working Time 4 hours
Servings 1 wrap

Ingredients

  • 3 balls Bernat Alize Blanket EZ Loop Yarn

Instructions

  • Step 1. Place the tail end of your yarn to the right and the ball of yarn to the left. Count out 22 loops from right to left. This is your foundation row.
  • Rows 1 + 2: For row one, work from left to right, using a criss cross stitch. For row two, work from right to left, again using a criss cross stitch.
  • Rows 3 + 4: For row 3, work from left to right. Work one pair of criss cross stitches. Then work 20 knit stitches. End the row with one more pair of criss cross stitches. Work row 4 the same way, from right to left.
  • Repeat rows 3 + 4 until the wrap is almost as long as you'd like (60-74 inches), making sure the last row ends to the right. Then repeat rows 1 + 2.
  • Count out two additional loops on the working yarn and cut off the excess yarn. Clip open additional loops to create a tail. Bind off the top row, then use the tail to tie a knot and clip excess.
  • Create 2 pockets. Pockets should be 12 loops wide and 7 rows tall and worked with a knit stitch. Row 7 should end to the right. Count out 12 additional loops on the working yarn and cut off excess yarn. Clip open the 12 additional loops to create a long tail.
  • Center a pocket at each end of the wrap and pin. Try on wrap and adjust position of pockets if needed. Use long tail to attach the pockets to the wrap.

How to Finger Knit a Wrap/Scarf FAQ

Q: Where do you get loop yarn?

A: I like the Bernat Alize Blanket EZ brand that you can find at Jo-Ann. It’s pricey so I watch for sales or use a coupon. There are other brands of loop yarn, but this one is definitely my favorite.

Q: What size is this wrap?

A: You can actually customize this wrap to make it any size you’d like. I made mine 22 loops wide, which ends up being 15 inches wide. You could adjust that to make it wider or narrower as you wish. For length, just continue working it up until it’s as long as you want. I made mine quite long because I wanted it to hit beneath my hips – it’s about 78 inches long.

Q: How many skeins of loop yarn does this wrap take?

A: You will need 3 skeins of the Bernat Alize Blanket EZ brand loop yarn, which is my favorite brand of loop yarn. PLEASE NOTE that there are other brands of loop yarn which come in different lengths, so if you use a different brand I don’t know how many skeins/balls it will take.

Q: How long will it take to make?

A: I didn’t time myself exactly, but my best guess is 3-4 hours. If you are pretty familiar with loop yarn, you may be able to work it up even faster.

Q: Can you wash this wrap?

A: Yes, loop yarn is machine washable and dryable. Follow the directions on the yarn.

I am so sorry to be a pain. I have removed ad blocks but there isn’t a link to click on and if I just copy and paste the link it takes me back to the original page. Arghh, what am I doing wrong?
