In today’s post: Learn how to make this adorable snowman ornament from wood slices.
My daughter LOVES crafting. She often comes home from school and disappears into my craft room, reappearing half an hour later with her latest creation (and leaving the latest giant mess). So it’s fun, especially this time of year, to find crafts she and I can do together. This little DIY snowman ornaments is the latest in the mommy daughter craft day lineup.
Didn’t he turn out cute? He’s very easy to make and turns out so darling that I think we’re going to end up with an army of snowmen hanging from our Christmas tree.
This is a great Christmas craft to do with your kids! And frankly, it’s cute enough that you could make these at a ladies’ craft night too!
Snowman ornament supplies
To make a wood slice snowman ornament, you will need:
- Small wood slices – I used these wood slices from Amazon (affiliate link), but you may be able to find similar slices at a craft store OR cut your own from a tree branch. Look for slices that range from 1.5 to 2.5 inches in diameter.
- Hot glue gun
- Ribbon or fabric scraps to make a scarf
- Toothpicks
- Orange and black markers
- Twine
- Small twigs (optional, but cute)
How to make a snowman ornament
Watch this video to see the whole process, or read the written instructions that follow:
Step 1: Choose two wood slices, one slightly larger than the other. Use hot glue to glue them together OR thread twine through the holes in each slice and tie them together.
NOTE: If your wood slices don’t have holes and you need to glue them together, it’s a good idea to glue a small popsicle stick spanning the two slices to secure them together.
Step 2: Cut a 7 inch length of twine and fold it in half to make a loop. Glue the ends to the top of the smaller slice.
Step 3: Cut twigs so they resemble snowman arms and glue them to the larger wood slice.
Step 4: Flip the wood slice over and use a black permanent marker to make dots for eyes and buttons, as shown below.
Step 5: Use an orange marker to color the end of a toothpick.
Step 5: Cut off the orange end of the toothpick and use hot glue to glue it on as a nose.
Step 6: Cut an 8-inch length of ribbon. Cut a fringe in both ends, as shown below. Tie the ribbon around the snowman’s neck, using hot glue to secure.
And your adorable snowman ornament is ready to hang on your tree!

Thanks Autumn!
We did this project with our grandkids today and while theirs may not have looked as good as yours 🙂 they had a ball – and the instructions were perfect. So thanks again for a great post!
