Apple Roses look fancy but are easy to make using frozen puff pastry. They bake up golden and flakey with warm flavors of apple pie.

Ingredients

  • 3 red Apples
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon Juice
  • 1.5 teaspoons Apple Pie Spice or Pumpkin Pie Spice or cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon Sugar
  • 2 sheets Frozen Puff Pastry Dough one 17.3 oz box
  • 1/2 cup Apple Butter

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees farhenheit.
  • Slice each apple in half and remove the core. Slice each apple half into very thin slices, about 1/16th of an inch thick. The slices should be perpendicular to the core. Place apples in a microwave safe bowl and cover with water. Add lemon juice to the water.
    Slicing apple thinly.
  • Microwave until the apples are soft and very bendable but not mushy. This will take between 3-6 minutes. Drain the apples well. Mix the apple pie spice and sugar and sprinkle over apples; toss to combine.
Apples microwaved until flexible; adding cinnamon sugar.
  • Thaw the first sheet of pastry dough in the microwave as directed on the package, taking care not to let the dough get warm. Unfold the pastry on a lightly floured surface and roll out to a 10x14 inch rectangle. Slice into six 10x2ish inch rectangles.
Rolling out pastry dough and slicing into six.
  • Spread a heaping teaspoon of apple butter across each pastry strip. Then layer apple slices across the top half of each pastry strip, with the peel side up (the edges of the apple will go up over the top edge of the pastry). Then fold the bottom half of each pastry strip up to cover the straight edges of the apples.
Pastry dough with apple butter and apples on each slice.
  • Starting at one end, roll up each strip of pastry to create a rose shape. Place in a well greased cupcake tin. Repeat with all six pieces, then place cupcake tin in the fridge while you repeat with the other sheet of pastry.

  • Bake the apple roses for approximately 40 minutes until edges of pastry are golden brown and pastry is cooked through.

  • Serve warm. Top with powdered sugar if desired.

Notes

Choose an apple with a lot of flavor for the best results, like a Pink Lady or Honeycrisp.
