The Best Muddy Buddy Recipe
Everyone at my house LOVES muddy buddies. We love them so much I didn’t really think the classic recipe could be improved upon, so when one of my sons had the idea to “s’morify” muddy buddies (aka puppy chow) I was skeptical. Can muddy buddies really get better? Well the answer is ABSOLUTELY! This S’mores Muddy Buddy recipe is my new favorite snack mix, and once you make them everyone will be asking you to make them again.
Ingredients
We start with the classic muddy buddy recipe but give it a few twists to make it even tastier! Here’s what you need to make S’mores Muddy Buddies:
- Chex Cereal: I usually use rice chex, but any unflavored chex will work just fine here as the base for this treat.
- Chocolate Chips: As per the classic recipe, I use semi sweet chocolate chips (milk chocolate chips are too sweet for this recipe). This is the base of the chocolate sauce you’ll coat the cereal with.
- Creamy Peanut Butter: You’ll melt this with the chocolate chips to make the chocolate sauce.
- Butter: Part of the chocolate sauce.
- Vanilla Extract: Part of the chocolate sauce.
- Powdered Sugar: To shake the coated cereal in.
- Golden Grahams Cereal: This is the first addition that really amps up the flavor here. Golden Grahams replace some of the Chex cereal in this recipe, getting covered in that delicious chocolate coating, plus you’ll leave some plain to make sure you get even more graham flavor in each bite. Golden Grahams work better than actual graham crackers because they stay super crunchy!
- Mini Marshmallows: Like the Golden Grahams, you’ll cover some of the marshmallows with the chocolate sauce/coating, and leave some plain. I was seriously astounded at how good the mini marshmallows are with the chocolate coating!
- Hershey Bar: This is optional because you already have chocolate flavor from the chocolate chips, but I tossed in some chopped up Hershey Bar and we loved the extra hit of milk chocolate flavor you get from it!
Storage
Make sure you store these S’mores Muddy Buddies at room temperature in a a sealed airtight container, otherwise the mini marshmallows that aren’t covered with chocolate will go stale quickly! We generally go through an entire batch of these treats the same day we make them, but they should stay good stored in a tupperware type container for a couple of day.
