I know it’s still only the middle of September, but my kids think Halloween is tomorrow (thank you Walmart), so we’re already doing Halloween crafts around here. And I gotta say, this was a fun one: witch hat surprise cookies. These cookies are easy to make using an ice cream cone and a chocolate wafer, and they look like cute little Halloween witch hats. The best part about them, though, is what happens when you bite into them:
More treats pour out! My kids were pretty excited about these.
Even my daughter, who helped me fill them, couldn’t wait to bite the top off of one and peer inside:
These would be an absolute hit at any class or family Halloween party! Make them ahead and surprise the kids with what’s inside, or put out all the fixin’s and let the kids make their own.
To make Halloween witch hat surprise cookies, you’ll need:
- Oreo ice cream cones (if you can’t find this variety, just use chocolate cones)
- Nabisco Famous Chocolate Wafers (often found on the top shelf of the cookie aisle)
- Green frosting and a flat tip
- Chocolate chips & butterscotch chips
- Various small candies to fill the cones with
1 – Gather your supplies. 2 – Fill a cone with candy. 3 – Melt a handful of chocolate chips in a sandwich bag. 4 – Snip of a corner of the bag and “pipe” chocolate around the circular edge of the cone. 5 – Top with a chocolate wafer. 6 – Place hat in the freezer for about 5 minutes to harden the chocolate. 7 – Pipe a flat ribbon of green frosting around the cone, then “pipe” on a buckle using melted butterscotch chips in a sandwich bag.
Then wait for your kids to tell you you’re the coolest mom ever. And then explain why they still have to wait over a month until Halloween actually gets here.
In the meantime, check out some of these other fun Halloween kid treats:
