DIY Christmas Tree Wall Hanging

In today’s post: Turn inexpensive bamboo sticks into a modern Christmas tree you can hang on your wall! This is an easy Christmas craft for adults you can complete in about half an hour.

Today’s project was inspired by this wall hanging from Ikea – I loved the modern look of the wood slats and the fact that you can decorate it so many different ways! Obviously you can just buy the Ikea version but we crafty people like making things ourselves, so I figured out how to make a smaller version at home.

Christmas Tree Wall Hanging

This tree would be perfect for anywhere you want to add some Christmas cheer without taking up space! It’s just the right size for mini ornaments and will look great on your wall or front door.

Supplies

Here’s what you need to make this Christmas tree wall hanging:

• Bamboo sticks: You’ll use 16 inch long bamboo sticks for this project. I used these sticks from Amazon. They are thin, which meant I was able to cut them with wire cutters. If you purchase thicker bamboo sticks, you’ll need a way to cut them.
• Wire cutters
• E6000 or other permanent glue
• Ribbon, mini ornaments, ornament hangers, faux greenery, etc

Instructions

Cut Bamboo Sticks

Begin by cutting the bamboo sticks to the lengths shown below:

• Two at 3.25 inches
• Two at 6.5 inches
• Two at 8.5 inches
• Two at 9.5 inches
• You’ll also need four full length sticks that won’t require cutting, they will be approximately 16 inches.

Print template

Download the template by choosing this text and print it out on 8.5×11 inch paper. Tape the pages together without overlapping. Lay half of the bamboo sticks on the template as shown below, covering the lines that are angled down to the right.

Glue Tree together

Now you’ll glue on the other half of the bamboo sticks, which angle down to the left. Place a dot of permanent glue on each spot where the sticks are going to intersect, then press the appropriate bamboo stick down. (Remember, you are gluing the sticks to each other NOT to the paper template.)

If excess glue squeezes out the sides, use a toothpick to remove it. Once all the wood sticks are glued down, place books over the entire wall hanging and allow it to dry completely (overnight is best).

Decorate

Now your wall hanging is complete and you can decorate it however you wish! I used wire ornament hangers to add a variety of mini ornaments, then used hot glue to attach some greenery and a bow/loop at the top. You could decorate this a number of different ways: it would look cute decorated with pine cones and berries, or even seashells!
