DIY Floating Ghost Wreath

In today’s post: Learn how to make this adorable floating ghost wreath for your front door this fall! This is an easy Halloween craft for adults you can complete in under an hour of hands on time.

Easy Halloween Craft

This wreath will look so cute on your front door for Halloween – and it’s super easy to make! I used adorable wooden ghost ornaments from Amazon and glued them onto a cardboard base painted the same color as my door so it looks like the ghosts are flying around in a circle. I added some colorful ribbon to make it pop.

Supplies

Here’s what you need to make this cute floating ghost wreath:

• Cardboard: you’ll need two pieces of cardboard that are 12×12 inches (or one 12×24 inch piece)
• Box Cutters: for cutting the cardboard
• Paint that matches your door + Foam Paintbrush
• These wooden ghost ornaments from Amazon (or other small ghost shapes)
• Spackle to fill the holes in the ghost ornaments
• Sandpaper for distressing
• Assorted ribbon, about one yard of each kind
• Hot glue gun

How to Make a DIY Ghost Wreath

Prep the Ghost Ornaments

** This step is optional ** I love the look of the wooden ghost ornaments I ordered to make this wreath with (and they are inexpensive!) but because they are ornaments they have a hole in the top. I thought those holes would be distracting on the finished wreath, so I started by filling each hole with spackle.

Once the spackle dried, it was a little bit brighter white than the rest of the ghost, so I used fine sand paper to distress the ghosts. Because they are painted white underneath the design on front, sanding whitens up the edges and makes the spackle filling much less noticeable on the finished project.

Prep the Wreath Frame

The next step is to cut out two matching cardboard donut shapes; these will be the frame for your wreath. Trace two 12 inch diameter circles on your cardboard and cut them out with a sharp box cutter (protect the surface underneath with a cutting mat). Then draw a smaller circle inside each large one that is 5.75-6 inches in diameter and cut those out as well. Now you can paint one side and the edges of each donut with paint that matches your door.

Adhere the Ghosts

Place one of the cardboard donuts down with the painted side facing up. Lay out the ghost ornaments on the cardboard so they look like they are flying or floating around in a circle. You’ll use eight ghosts around the inside of the donut, and 13 ghosts around the outer edge of the donut, as shown below.

Try to distribute the ghosts evenly around the cardboard circle. Once you like the placement, use hot glue to adhere each ghost down on the cardboard.

Finish with Hanging Loop

Once the ghosts are all adhered, flip the wreath over. Lay three or four ribbons on top of each other, and fold in the middle and overlap to create a loop. Hot glue the loop to the back of the cardboard circle.

Now grab the second cardboard circle. Use plenty of hot glue to adhere it to the first one. Take care not to sandwich the bottom ends of the ribbons between the two pieces of cardboard. Flip the wreath right side up and trim the ribbons to the desired length.

Display

Now it’s time to hang your wreath on your door! Because the base of this wreath is cardboard, be sure to display this wreath on a door that is protected from rain. Standing close to it you’ll be able to see the cardboard, but from the street it will just look like a circle of floating ghosts.
