In today’s post: This sweet and salty Halloween Chex Mix starts with Chex cereal covered in a super easy homemade caramel sauce and toasted in the microwave. Add popcorn, Reese’s pieces, and candy corn for a super tasty mix you can make in minutes.
Halloween Chex Mix
This Chex mix looks simple, and it’s incredibly easy to make, but it tastes SO GOOD! The sweetness come from Chex cereal that gets toasted in a delicious homemade caramel sauce – the cereal is so good on it’s own I almost didn’t add any other ingredients. But sweet things always need a salty complement, so in went lightly salted popcorn and Reese’s Pieces for that peanut butter and caramel combo. Chocolate chips and candy corn complete this fun mix. Easy Chex Mix can be made in under 30 minutes and it’s perfect as Halloween party treats or as an afternoon snack.
Ingredients
Here’s what you need for this easy mix:
- Honey Nut Chex: you can use any type of Chex you have on hand, but Honey Nut adds extra flavor
- Popcorn: I like to use light butter or sea salt flavored popcorn. If you don’t like popcorn, you could use pretzels instead.
- Reese’s Pieces
- Chocolate Chips: I used semi-sweet, but feel free to use white chocolate chips if you prefer
- Candy Corn: if you hate candy corn, just leave it out! If you love it, add more.
- Butter, Brown Sugar, White Sugar and Baking Soda for the easy microwave caramel sauce
How to Make these Treats
Classic snack mixes require you to bake the mix for a while, stirring every so often. This fun mix is fast and easy because we use a simple trick: all the toasting happens in the microwave! No need to heat up your oven or stove.
Make The Caramel Chex
You’ll start by measuring out 4 cups of Chex cereal into a large microwavable bowl. Then, in a another bowl or glass measuring cup, melt butter together with sugar in the microwave, then mix until smooth – now you have caramel sauce! Add a touch of baking soda, then pour it over the chex and stir to combine.
Now all you have to do is toast the Chex in the microwave in 30 second intervals until it’s super crunchy:
Add The Other Ingredients
Let the toasted caramel Chex cool for a few minutes on a baking sheet (no need for foil or parchment paper). Once it’s cool, you can place it in a large bowl and mix in the other ingredients: salty popcorn, peanut butter Reese’s Pieces, chocolate chips, and Candy Corn!
Note: The different ingredients in this mix aren’t stuck together, so when you put it all in a bowl the heavier candies tend to make their way to the bottom. If you want to serve this at a party, you might want to mix the Chex and popcorn and then split that up between individual cups, then add the other candies on top of each cup.

Oh so good and oh so easy! I haven’t made it yet this year but made an almost identical version of this recipe last year and the year before. I can’t wait to do it again next weekend for our Halloween sleepover!

This was Very sweet! And I used regular popcorn. All the Candy sinks to the bottom of the bowl. But I think it would good maybe for a party just to have, it looks neat. Or a kids school party in a small paper cup. Maybe use regular Chex, since you mix with caramel sauce (super easy to make in the microwave).
