In today’s post: Learn how to make a gathered skirt for summer with a flattering cut and a flat front waistband.
Four years ago I shared a tutorial for the PERFECT gathered skirt. Did the world need another gathered skirt tutorial?
Why yes. Yes it did.
Most home sewn gathered skirts are ugly. They have elastic all around the waistband, which looks stupid across the front, and all that fabric gathered at the waist isn’t doing anyone any favors. In fact, making an ugly gathered skirt might be the universal shared experience of anyone who has tried to teach themself to sew!
But I like sewing and I like comfy gathered skirts, so I figured out how to solve all your gathered skirt problems. My perfect gathered skirt:
- Has a flat front waistband that looks sleek and professional
- Has an elastic back waistband so it’s suuuuper comfortable
- Is cut on the curve so it’s wider at the hem than at the waist for maximum swish with minimal bulk
- Is made from soft, drapey fabric so it doesn’t bunch and billow
“Maximum swish with minimal bulk.” That might be the dorkiest thing I’ve said all year 😉
I recently finished this new skirt using my 4 year old tutorial, and it’s become a summer wardrobe staple.

With the end of summer, I can still envision myself pairing this lovely skirt with leggings! 🙂 I just want to have 365 days of positivity and not to be bothered by weather 🙂

Elastic waist skirts are everywhere right now. Not always flattering but not ugly? Thought that a bit unfair.
