When I was a kid, I LOVED getting boxes of conversation hearts on Valentine’s Day. I mean, any card with candy was awesome (meaning it didn’t get thrown away quite as fast as the non-candy ones). But the conversations hearts were just the awesome-est. So when I saw the boxes of Sweethearts hit the stores this year, I knew I wanted to make a fun DIY Valentine’s Day card using them for my daughter’s first school Valentine’s party. Here’s what I came up with:
A little photo card that makes it look like my daughter is holding up a box of Sweethearts. Cute!
It’s a bit like the photo gift card holder I made for teacher appreciation last year, but even easier to make!
I had so much fun making these, and they’re super easy to put together. This one is my favorite:
I printed out the photos and some cards that say “Happy Valentine’s Day Sweetheart”. My daughter signed the cards and taped them to the back of each photo. Then she used a tape runner to adhere a box of sweethearts to the front of each photo. Here’s a quick video that shows the whole process:
The first thing you’ll need to do to make these photo cards is take some pictures of your child. You can have your child stand in front of any plain background. I used blue seamless photography paper taped to a wall, but any plain wall or background will work.
Ask your child to hold her hands over her head as if she’s holding something up, then start taking pictures. You want to take a vertical photo and have your child (including her hands) fill up the bottom half of the photo, making sure the top half of the photo is empty wall. I helped my daughter put her hands over her head and get them level with each other, and then I asked her to freeze while I stepped away from her and picked up my camera. Then I kept telling her to keep her arms frozen while I asked her to make some funny faces or look up at her hands. I also took some photos of her with one finger pointing up in the air, and those turned out cute too. That pose is probably a little easier for younger kids to do.
Once I had a variety of photos I liked, I printed them out at 4×6. I had them printed with a white border around them to make them look more like a card. Then I made a printable “Happy Valentine’s Day Sweetheart” note to put on the back of each photo, and bought boxes of Sweethearts.
You can download the printable notes by clicking here. I printed them on white cardstock.
Cut apart the cards and adhere one to the back of each photo – we used a tape runner. Then adhere a box of Sweethearts to the front of each photo, and you’re done!
She’s pretty excited to give these out at school.
Super fast, super easy, and an adorable DIY Valentine’s Day card.
